Oxford Street Sugar Bush

Following an adventure to Sugar Moon Farm, a local sugar shack, the boys became really interested in tapping trees.  So interested, James brought home a tree tap from the sugar shack and insisted on tapping the large maple tree in our back yard.

Tapping the tree was a fun exercise but to be honest, we didn't expect to get a lot of sap.  Hence the small water bottle we used :-)  To our surprise, there was tons of sap.

We filled seven 10 litre containrs (thanks Rich).  Everynight after school the boys would come home and check the tree.

Next step was to boil down the sap.  It takes A LOT of sap to make not very much syrup.

Over the Easter weekend, we used a very large pot to boil down the sap.  Dad and Richard reminded us about the importance of not getting too close to the hot pot.

Can you see their fingers ....

In the end a little orange tap ensured we kept our distance.  The syrup tasted a little funny but we have a lot of fun making it !!
Can't wait for next spring.
